Three Good Vidoes

I got lucky and captured three good videos over the past 24 hours! You’re going to hear Anna yell her name a lot in these. She seems to do this a lot while I’m recording her, so I think she might know she’s on the screen? Or it’s just good self promotion, maybe.

These are a pretty good snapshot of what Anna is like at 1 year, 5 months old.

High Heels
Anna and I were home alone for a bit last night while Maria attended a work function. Anna went in and got these high heels from the closet and apparently knew just what to do with them. This came right after we spent fifteen minutes putting a balloon in the bathroom, closing the door, opening the door, taking the balloon out, closing the door again, and repeating.

Couch Monster
Anna got up on the couch by herself once a couple of weeks ago, but hasn’t been able to again since. This morning she climbed right up there several times. The last growth spurt must have given her just enough leverage with that knee. We have entered a new era – one that will bring some bumps on the head.

Letters
We’ve been working on letters and colors with Anna for a few weeks, and dug out these letter magnets to play with this morning. She’s able to identify some letters now, and she can usually pick out colors if you ask her to (which one is red?). We’re still working on saying colors though; she still says almost everything is blue.

Teeth

Here’s a quick update on Anna, since it’s been a while since we posted anything. First of all, she’s teething like crazy. We just spotted her first molar, and her front teeth are coming in quickly. She’s also starting to put words together; this morning when Maria asked if she wanted breakfast, and Anna told us “toast, bowl” to mean that she wants toast for breakfast, but she wants it in her bowl (to carry around), rather than in her chair. She also likes just yelling out her name a lot.

It seems that we have officially lost the afternoon nap, which is unfortunate timing with all the teething going on. Anna can get pretty stressed out after 5pm these days, but we try to keep her active and she does alright. We’re getting a lot of use out of the new beach up the street from our house, and a lot of early evening baths.

Anna continues to love Sesame Street, and she’s grown especially fond of Elmo, Abbey and Snuffaluffagus. She also likes to do a lot of pretend cooking, and feed her stuffed animals (as well as Maria and I). Otherwise we read a lot of books, take a lot of walks, and look out the windows. Oh, and she’s also very helpful when we put away groceries.

We’re really excited for all of our travels coming up – we have three weeks in a row with family reunions and a wedding. Anna will get to meet a lot of new family members, and see a lot of new places. Wish us luck for some long naps in the car.

Meeting Cows

Anna got to meet some cows last weekend at the farmers’ market. She wasn’t scared at all, and reached right out to pet the big ones and this one little calf as well.

Big Words

Over the past few days, Anna’s verbal skills have really begun to advance. She has begun saying two syllable words, and is getting very good at mimicking noises. She can suddenly say her own name, as well as the names of her favorite Sesame Street characters, Elmo and Abby. She’s also saying lots of other new words like baby, heavy and hippo.

Here’s a quick video showing off some new noises, plus some pretty awesome bug riding skills.

Another thing I recorded tonight is Anna’s new found love of being really affectionate during meals. She loves hugging you while she eats. She and I also sometimes play a game called Smush Face in which we smush our faces together. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Anna is willing to play games like this when her face and hands are covered in food.
